Faculty for Fairness Petition

To University of Michigan Faculty:

Last week, a few faculty members inappropriately circulated an anti-union petition regarding our GSRA campaign using University resources.  Although some departments issued statements of retraction, it is difficult to tell how far the impression–whether intended or not–that this was an official University petition might have spread to GSRAs.

To help mitigate this effect and restore an atmosphere of neutrality and non-intimidation, GEO members and GSRAs are now contacting faculty who we think would be willing to sign a statement of neutrality regarding our campaign for a GSRA union election.

If you, or anyone you know, would be willing to sign this petition, we encourage you to sign and share. We are days away from the hearing to determine whether GSRAs will have collective bargaining rights and we appreciate  any faculty member who believes that GSRAs should have the right to  determine for themselves if they want to form a union.

Letter of support to Prof. Brown & the UC Davis English Deptartment

Last week, the Stewards’ Council voted to send the following letter of support to Prof. Nathan Brown, a faculty member who spoke out about the violence against students at UC Davis, and the UC Davis English Department, which has joined in condemning these events. The letter was sent on Friday.

Dear Professor Brown and Faculty Members of the UC Davis English Department:

We, the members of the Graduate Employees’ Organization (GEO) at the University of Michigan, are writing to offer you our fullest support in light of events at the University of California-Davis. We stand in solidarity with the letter that Professor Brown wrote to Chancellor Linda Katehi asking her to step down. We are appalled by her attempts to quell peaceful protests
by violent means while hypocritically purporting to care about fostering a safe and friendly atmosphere on campus. We feel strongly that what happened at UC Davis is not an isolated event, but rather a nationwide attempt to use fear and physical force to silence opposition. What happened at UC Davis affects us all.

At the same time, we are inspired by your courage to stand up for students, faculty, and staff who want to make their voices heard.

Thank you for so forcefully and eloquently speaking our on our behalf.

In solidarity,

The Graduate Employees’ Organization (GEO)

Letter from the GSRA Campaign: Allied Voices of Support

We’re writing this week with news from beyond the UM campus–overwhelming support for GSRAs’ right to vote to form a union has been rolling in from all over.

Like tens of hundreds of Graduate Student Research Assistants at UM, people all over Michigan agree on the basic premise that GSRAs are employees and that we have the right to vote. Those in support of our right to vote include:

Graduate employees—including graduate research assistants who have formed unions–at other universities. Here’s one:

“I am a graduate employee, researcher, and union leader; never has my role as a unionist negatively affected my relationships with my advisor, primary investigator, colleagues, or faculty in my department. In fact, my role as a leader has built stronger and deeper relationships with my co-workers. We respect each other as colleagues and the union provides resources, institutional capacity, and a legal basis for our relationships. Everyone has the right to form and to join trade unions for the protection of their interests, and GSRAs at the University of Michigan are no different; they deserve the right to self-determination. “

Yu Sun, PhD Candidate in Mathematics

President, Wayne State Univ. Graduate Employees Organizing Committee

Leading civil rights and civil liberties organizations and advocates; here are a few:

”The rights of employees to organize and bargain collectively are aspects of freedom of association. The Michigan ACLU supports employees’ right to form unions, and the right of research assistants at the University of Michigan to a vote.”

Kary Moss, Executive Director, ACLU of Michigan

“The Michigan NAACP stands with employees who choose to form unions because the structure of a union prevents discrimination on the job and helps close racial and prejudicial pay gaps. The right to vote is an essential Constitutional right and it should never be abridged or denied.”

Yvonne White, President, Michigan NAACP

“I urge the University of Michigan to continue its legacy of progressive leadership by supporting the rights of graduate students to organize. Over the years U of M has often been a lone voice, challenging the complicity of universities in policies and practices that have fostered injustice. You should not abandon this tradition now.”

Grace Lee Boggs
Philosopher, activist, and founder of Detroit Summer

“We support the right of graduate student research assistants to organize and hold an election. Academic unions, including the GEO, have played a strong role in achieving fairness and equality for gay and transgender employees. The GEO has an admirable history of working to end discrimination based on sexual orientation and gender identity. And, union contracts can help ensure that equal access to health care benefits are maintained over time.”

Denise Brogan-Kator
Equality Michigan Executive Director

Religious organizations:

“Our tradition teaches that establishing and enforcing the protections of a system of law are among the highest human obligations. Efforts by employees to organize unions are of a piece with this obligation, and no one should stand in the way of those who are fulfilling it. We support the right of Graduate Student Research Assistants to vote to form a union.”

Selma Goode, Executive Director, Jewish Labor Committee

“The teachings of all faiths call for everyone to be treated with respect and fairness.  For employees that means the right to choose, in a democratic election, to be represented by a labor union.  We believe unions are essential to fairness and justice in the workplace and  employees should have the right to make that choice through an election.”

Dr. Charles Rooney (PhD UM, 1974)

Michigan Catholics for the Common Good

Allies in the labor movement:

”We, the Huron Valley Central Labor Council, represent thousands of municipal, state, federal and private sector employees who work with you to make our county, our city, and the University of Michigan run. We are also residents of Michigan who benefit from the research gains you make and the vitality that UM’s research program brings to Washtenaw county. We support your right to vote to form a union, and stand with you against anyone who tries to interfere with that right.”

Huron Valley Central Labor Council, AFL-CIO

UM faculty:

“Why would the top academic leadership of a university as great as UM side [against GSRAs’ right to vote and] with an organization like the Mackinac Center, which is dedicated to stripping funding and resources from public universities?”

Richard Bernstein

Attorney; UM Lecturer in Political Science

Former Member, Wayne State University Board of Governors

Whatever one’s beliefs about how we should cast our ballots, our right to vote shouldn’t be in doubt. As GSRAs continue talking with each other about our issues and our needs at work, we’re heartened to find that the consensus behind our right to vote is so strong. The Michigan Employment Relations Commission is currently reconsidering our request for an election, and we hope that they’ll order one as quickly as possible.

If you have questions or concerns, or would like to become more involved in the campaign, please contact us at gsracampaign@geo3550.org.

Yours truly,
 Andrea Jokisaari

GEO Letter of Solidarity to UW-Madison and UW-Milwaukee

At this week’s stewards meeting, GEO voted to send the following letter the the Universities of Wisconsin Madison, and Milwaukee, as a statement of solidarity.

“Solidarity Statement to UW-Madison/ Solidarity Statement to UW-Milwaukee
Graduate Employees Organization (GEO)- AFT Local 3550

We, the Stewards Council of the Graduate Employees Organization (GEO) of the University of Michigan, are writing because we are deeply concerned with recent political action in the state of Wisconsin. We understand that Governor Scott Walker has issued a proposal that would essentially eliminate collective bargaining rights for the 175,000 union workers in Wisconsin. The “budget-repair” measure not only erodes collective bargaining rights, but also increases the amount public employees pay into healthcare and pensions. All eyes are on the state of Wisconsin, as the future of the state’s labor force hangs in the balance. We feel that the actions of Governor Scott Walker are a rash attempt to silence and divide Wisconsin’s unionized workforce. Thus, we stand in solidarity against Governor Scott Walker’s proposal and with our union brothers and sisters fighting back.”

GEO continues to send our thoughts and support to the workers in Wisconsin, as they fight to keep their rights.

GEO endorses One Kalamazoo

At the Wednesday October 28 Steward’s Council Meeting, the Steward’s Council voted to endorse One Kalamazoo’s campaign to support Kalamazoo’s Non-Discrimination Ordinance.

On June 9, 2009 a unanimous vote of the Kalamazoo City Commission expanded the city’s Non-Discrimination Ordinance to include protections for sexual orientation and gender identity. Those expansions are currently suspended, and will be removed from the ordinance unless Kalamazoo votes YES on November 3.

By its vote, the GEO Steward’s Council indicates its agreement with One Kalamazoo’s belief that all people—including gay and transgender people—should be treated fairly and equally where they live and work.

GEO members who support One Kalamazoo’s campaign can help in many ways, but the most valuable ways to help at this point in the campaign are to make a personal donation to the campaign or to travel to Kalamazoo to help canvas and get out the vote.

For more information about making a donation, go to: https://secure.actblue.com/contribute/page/onekalamazoo

If you’d like to help with canvassing, email umgeo@umich.edu and we’ll work with you to find other GEO members to carpool with!

GEO has a long history of supporting expansions of rights and increased respect for Transgender, Gay, Lesbian, and Bisexual persons.  In 1975, GEO and Ann Arbor’s Transport Employees Union became the first labor unions in the United States to negotiate contracts which included protections for queer folk in their non-discrimination clauses.  Over the years GEO has continued to fight to make sure that all of our members have equal access to health care benefits, jobs, and respect at work regardless of their sexual orientation, gender identity, or gender expression.

Thanks in solidarity

GEO appreciates the support and solidarity of many unions and union councils, student organizations, and campus governing bodies, shown throughout this year’s negotiations process. Last week, we ran an ad in the Michigan Daily that included a list of some of our supporters; we thank all the people below (and more!) for “respecting the line” and standing with our union.

Support the NYU Strikers!

Through a combination of individual member contributions and our solidarity fund, GEO members have contributed at least $700 to help our sisters and brothers in NYC. There are three things you can do right now to support the TAs on strike:

1. Sign the online petition initiated by professors Judith Butler, Frederic Jameson, Joan Scott, Gayatri Spivak, Paul Gilroy, Talal Asad, Donna Haraway, Slavoj Zizek, and Etienne Balibar:

http://new.petitiononline.com/tosexton/petition.html

2. If you have not done so already, write Sexton directly and tell him to negotiate with the union and rescind his threat of a blacklist for striking TAs. Sexton had the hubris to put it on the NYU homepage – to see the full text of the threat, see www.nyu.edu – click on “A Letter to NYU Graduate Assistants from John Sexton.” The threats are laid out towards the end following the sentence “Lastly, I wish to talk about the strike.”

You can write Sexton at john.sexton@nyu.edu. Make sure you cc a copy to Martin Lipton, the chair of NYU’s Board of Trustees, MLipton@wlrk.com as well as the provost David McLaughlin (david.mclaughlin@nyu.edu).

Also cc jay.driskell(at)yale.edu, so the messages also get to the strikers.

3. Write a check to the strike fund:

Checks can be made out to: “UAW Local 2110 Strike Fund.”

Send it to:
UAW Local 2110
113 University Place, 5th floor
New York, NY 10003.

NYU On Strike

Picket lines went up around NYU’s campus on Wed, Nov 9. The NYU administration has refused to negotiate a second contract with the union of graduate employees, GSOC, hiding behind a questionable decision of the NLRB. This has forced the union to strike to bring the administration to the bargaining table. Early accounts indicate large, spirited crowds on the picket lines, with lots of support from the community. Stay up to date on developments and find out how you can support GSOC at:

Support LEO!

The Lecturers’ Employee Organization (LEO), representing nontenure-track faculty at UM is in the process of bargaining their first contract. Unsurprisingly, the administration is dragging their feet on their efforts to improve job security, benefits, wages, and worker voice.
