International Student Meeting, Thurs, 4pm, June 24th

Dear All,

Next Thursday June 24 at 4.00 p.m we will be holding a meeting at the GEO offices (527 E. Liberty #205. across the street from Border’s and right next to the Michigan Theater) to talk about International Student Issues in general, and to discuss the current crisis of the International Center. As everywhere else, the University is downsizing the International Center. The international Center provides crucial services for International students such as professional advise to get Visas. Given the new legislation and the new status of International Students as potential
“terrorist”, it doesn’t seem like a good idea to limit these services. So it is about time to face this problem as well as to discuss other potential concerns and issues that we want to be included in our next contract.

Please feel free to join us next Thursday, and pass the word around to anybody interested in participating in this discussion.

In Solidarity,

Luis Martin-Cabrera

P.S. If you have any further questions feel free to email me, And GOOOOOOOOO PISTONS

Membership Meeting Tonight

This semester, we switch from defense to offense, celebrating our win in defending our health care benefits and developing a bargaining platform to take into contract negotiations in the fall.

We need people from as many departments as possible to get together and talk about what we want to work for as we begin negotiating our next contract in the fall of 2004. What issues are international GSIs facing? What do we want to win on health care? How can we make things better for parents and low fractions?

7:00 p.m. Angel Hall – Auditorium C

Union Democracy

Next meeting is Thursday, 29 May 2003, from 2:00-3:30pm at the GEO Office.

This is the third meeting of an ad hoc committee established to discuss issues of union democracy in GEO. Minutes will be posted soon but for now can be requested by e-mailing Irfan (irfann@umich.edu).

Agenda items for this meeting are:
1) Membership Meetings:
* Are our membership meetings democratic?
* Should we be bothered that some members feel railroaded into voting in a particular manner?
* If so, what should we do to change their perception?

2) GEO Structure
* Do we need a Steering Committee?
