Committees

This article defines standing and ad hoc committees.

Proposed Changes

The proposed create specific procedures for creating standing and ad hoc committees as well as providing for the election of committee chairs.

Why are these changes are recommended?

Much of the work that gets done within GEO is done by committees, so the proposed changes suggest concrete ways to create committees as they become necessary for the effective functioning of GEO.

VIII. Committees
  • A. Committees, both standing and special, shall be created by action of the general membership at a membership meeting or by the Steering Committee.
  • B. Committees shall be restricted to implementing Organization policy as determined by the membership. They shall be under the administrative supervision of the Steering Committee and finally accountable to the membership.

VIII. Committees
  • A. Standing Committees:
    • 1. Standing committees shall be created by awritten resolution approved by a majority vote of the Stewards' Council for the purpose of implementing the policy of the Organization. The resolution shall delineate the role of the committee and the responsibilities of the chair.
    • 2. The chairs of all standing committees shall be elected by a majority vote of the Stewards' Council and be officers of the Organization as specified in Article VI.
    • 3. Chairs of all standing committees shall regularly report on the activities of their committee to the Stewards' Council and the membership.
    • 4. A standing committee may be dissolved by a written resolution approved by a majority vote of the Stewards' Council.
  • B. Ad Hoc Committees
    • 1. Ad hoc committees may be created to advise the membership or the Stewards' Council.
    • 2. Ad hoc committees shall be created by either:
      • a. A majority vote of the membership at a membership meeting; or
      • b. A majority vote of the Stewards' Council.
